Who knew that in my mid-70’s I would derive the greatest pleasure from resuscitating unused jewelry into attractive pieces of art? Transforming an earring into a pendant on a necklace or bracelet has brought me great joy.

Yes, I have created original pieces from purchased semi-precious beads. That has been fun and exciting for me as well as the end users, my clients. It has brought enjoyment because of the mental gymnastics that I employ to create a piece from scratch. My mantra has always been to learn something new each day.  This process empowers me to do just that.

Designing a new piece demands that I embark on a journey of discovery. I generally have a “plan” in mind once I have obtained the beads. However, I rarely know how the piece will turn out.  I have found that “listening” to the beads as they speak to me about corresponding colors, textures and styles has made the difference in my design efforts. Noting how the beads and metals organically come together to create a new piece of wearable art has brought me satisfaction. Capturing the life of a stone that I have found on a walking trail in a distant country has given me inspiration to preserve long-lasting memories of travels abroad.

With creative parents and siblings, it has been exciting to watch my own visual and tactile sensibilities come alive. Who knew, indeed!

Four years into my jewelry making adventure, I’ve had so much fun sharing my ever-expanding collection of necklaces, bracelets, and earrings with others. Who said that retirement must be boring and uneventful? Certainly, not me.
